Go For Gold With the Denver Nuggets
In 1967, the Denver Rockets joined the American Basketball Association. In 1974, they became the Denver Nuggets in anticipation of entering the National Basketball Association (NBA).
“Nuggets” may seem a strange name for a professional athletic team but this team makes it work. They got their name through a contest that was held. It was picked for two reasons. First, there had been a previous Denver team in the NBA called the Nuggets. Second, the mining boom of the 19th century made it the perfect choice, honoring all the prospectors that had moved to the area during the gold rush.
The Nuggets have won six NBA division titles, the most recent being in 2009. Before joining the NBA, the team had three division titles and a conference title during their run in the ABA. They were only one of four teams to join the NBA during the ABA/NBA merger.
Since 1999, the “Pepsi Center” has been the home of the Denver Nuggets. With seating for more than 19,000, the arena also houses the team’s practice facilities and a restaurant called the Blue Sky Grill. When not in use as a basketball court, the arena also serves as the home of the city’s lacrosse and hockey teams. Other events hosted there include the 2008 Democratic National Convention, various concerts, and other events. It has also been used as a filming site for a movie.
Accompanied by the Nuggets Dancers, the team’s “supermascot” Rocky the Mountain Lion is there at every home game, cheering the team on and boosting the spirit of the team and fans alike. When he’s not courtside, Rocky makes appearances throughout the area and the state. He as even appeared for other sports teams and has traveled internationally.
In the community, the Denver Nuggets players are also very active. They have committed to serving the underprivileged in the community through charities, outreach and education programs, and fundraising events. Like most professional athletes, team members strive to be good role models for the youth in their area and promote healthy lifestyles as well as good educational habits.
Athletic team uniforms evolve over time no matter which team you’re talking about. The Denver Nuggets are no exception. In addition to their name and league changes, the Nuggets have had several different uniform designs incorporating new logos and colors each time. Currently their team colors are blue, both in navy and powder shades, white, and gold.
